Ultimate Canoe Trip Outfitting

This service is included with Ultimate Outfitting and is an option for all Complete Outfitting customers who feel they might need a basic course in canoe trip skills. One of our staff will lead you on a three hour mini-trip and cover skills like camp set-up, food storage, portaging and paddling tips.  Available by advance reservation only at Oxtongue Lake.

Optional “Guide for a Day” Service

If you are not sure that you need a guide for the whole trip but could use some help getting started, this innovative program could be just the ticket. Available as an option with Ultimate Outfitting only, this innovative program goes beyond our standard “Greenhorn Service.” One of our experienced guides will accompany your group for the first day of your trip, helping you pack and prepare, reviewing the route in detail, assisting with permits and other pre-departure details. Along the way, the guide will teach skills like loading canoes, portaging techniques, paddling strokes, basic navigation, campsite selection and organization. Once you are safely established on your first site with dinner cooking, the guide will depart, allowing you to finish the trip on your own, with increased confidence and new found skills.

Cost

$275 plus HST per group (up to eight people), plus outfitting charges.

What to Bring

You need only bring clothing and personal items. If you forget something, our well-stocked stores carry a full selection of outdoor clothing, footwear, camping accessories and much more. Check the personal gear list on our planning page for more details.

Algonquin Outfitters has produced a handy canoe trip planning guide that will make your vacation planning a little easier. The guide is primarily intended as an aid for those using our outfitting services, especially first-time visitors to Algonquin Park, youth group leaders and complete outfitting customers. Route Planning Service

Once you have made a reservation for Ultimate Outfitting, we will send an email requesting information about your group and previous experience. This will help us plan out a custom canoe route for your trip. Some people are content to let us select a route based on the information provided and find out where they are going when they arrive. Others like to be more involved: we can send several options for you to consider, then have discussions with our route planners by email or phone, so that you are actively involved in the process.

What is a “tent cabin?”

We offer rustic overnight tent cabins and camping facilities for our canoe trip outfitting customers only at our Oxtongue Lake base. The tent cabins are large canvas wall tents with cots inside. Each one sleeps up to five people. We have six tent cabins and showers and washrooms are available. Reservations are required. This accommodation is handy if you decide to drive up to the area the day before your trip starts. We can also send a list of other local accommodation options if you are interested. Please note that other than paddling to a campsite on Lake Opeongo, there is no overnight accommodation at our Opeongo Store.
