Our most remote location is found on Cedar Lake, in the northern part of Algonquin Park. Without phone service or electricity, the Algonquin Outfitters store in the historic village of Brent holds a certain backwoods character that you cannot find anywhere else. Although situated at the end of a 40 km (25 miles) gravel road, the Brent access point (#27) is the starting point for canoe routes journeying into more remote and less travelled regions of the park. It also offers the best access to the only part of Algonquin Park where walleye (yellow pickerel) are found.
Algonquin Outfitters has been operating the Brent Store since 1982. Due to COVID-related precautions, only pre-booked canoe and kayak rentals are available at Brent. Advance reservations (preferably four weeks) are required for any rental. Customers familiar with the wide variety of services and products available at our Oxtongue Lake and Opeongo bases will find things a little different when they get to the remote Brent location, Unfortunately, the store itself is not open, so please arrive with all the supplies you need for your trip.
Long distance canoe trippers should be aware that there is no postal service at Brent, so resupplies cannot be mailed there. There is no cell service and no telephone other than a satellite phone reserved for emergency use. Petawawa River trippers should note that ABS whitewater canoes are not available at Brent. However, we do have a selection of these whitewater canoes, with or without rigging, at the Oxtongue Lake base.
You can read more about the Brent history and more about Jake Pigeon’s lifetime of experience in Algonquin Park.
