Kayak Polo comes to Huntsville!

Yes, starting in January 2017 the Town of Huntsville in conjunction with Muskoka Kayak School will be offering a program of 8 Kayak Polo sessions in the Centennial Pool.

Kayak Polo! What’s that?

Well, think of a game of Basketball, now think of that viscous game Water Polo, now visualize yourself sitting in your kayak alongside 5 fellow team mates facing 5 other ferocious looking adversaries. Someone throws the ball between the two teams and organized chaos ensues! Paddlers jostling for position, pushing is allowed and over you go into the water. A quick paddle roll or occasionally hand roll, because you dropped your and paddle, and a little bit more jostling and pushing! Then, a shot at the goal hanging high above the waters surface.

Well that’s the game of Kayak Polo, or as the Europeans call it Canoe Polo (Really, they do!). It’s an internationally recognized sport and Canada, (actually Welland, Ontario), will be the proud host of the 2018 World Kayak Polo Championships.

Here in Muskoka we don’t play the game quiet so rough as my initial description makes out. We play a modified version with less physical contact, which means that rarely anyone falls in, well not intentional anyway.

It’s a fun, social game that gives you both a good workout and hones or builds your kayaking skills. If you are a beginner you will be surprised how quickly your kayaking skills will improve without you even noticing.

So, now you know a little about Kayak Polo why not come out and give it a go? It’s a lot of fun J
