Muskoka Lakes Canoe Celebration @ Muskoka Lakes Museum
Jun 22 @ 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Head to the Muskoka Lakes Museum on Saturday, June 22, 2019 to celebrate paddling on the waterways of this historic township.

The Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling, Ontario is hosting a fun family event to celebrate one of the nation’s favourite summer pasttimes – canoeing. Running from 11am to 3pm, the event will feature on-the-hour talks by Ontario canoe route and camping expert, Kevin Callan.

Also known as “The Happy Camper” to his legion of outdoor adventure fans, Kevin will talk about his favourite routes in the area, the history of the waterways here and, with curator Doug Smith, about the unique canoes that are part of the museum’s fascinating collection. Kevin will also be speaking about his latest book, entitled Once Around Algonquin: An Epic Canoe Journey.

The Canoe Collection

The Muskoka Lakes Museum is home to eleven incredible canoes of various vintages. These include two authentic birch bark boats made by First Nations crafters, an early pioneer dug-out, an early sailing canoe, two six-board basswood canoes, a Walter Dean ‘Sunnyside Cruiser’, and two custom-made racing canoes that were crafted and raced by champion paddler Alister MacKenzie. The details of MacKenzie’s exciting story and more about our other canoes are available on a tour of the museum, and Kevin and Doug will discuss them as well.

Algonquin Outfitters North Canoe Rides

Algonquin Outfitters will be on site during the day, and visitors can go for a guided paddle along the river in their 8-seater North Canoe. Get a taste for how it must have felt to be a Voyageur exploring the lakes and rivers of Muskoka long ago. Visitors can also check out the Algonquin Outfitters retail location, just down the hill in Steamboat Bay.

Taco Kar Treats

Also on site at the Muskoka Lakes Canoe Celebration will be the Taco Kar Bala, serving up delicious Mexica fare. (nothing to do with canoeing whatsoever but will taste yummy in the tummy!)

About The Museum

The Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling was established in 1964. Located on the beautiful James Bartleman Island Park, right beside the locks and swing bridge downtown, the site includes picnic tables, washrooms and docking facilities, as well as the museum facility.

The museum’s comprehensive collection of almost 5000 artifacts spans the eras from the time of First Nations’ settlements several thousands years ago, through the region’s short pioneer period, (the museum has an authentic 1875 log cabin on-site) and into the tourism, cottaging and boat-building boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Muskoka Lakes Museum illustrates all of this fascinating history through its various permanent galleries and annual feature displays. Special events and programs, ‘Museum after Hours’ every Wednesday in July and August, children’s activities, and interactive exhibits bring this area’s exciting heritage to life.
