Algonquin Ice Out May 2018

“Someone please reboot spring, it’s having difficulty starting up”

On Monday April 30th Algonquin Park announced that they are once again delaying opening until May 11th 2018.

Wednesday May 9th Update

From the Friends of Algonquin park Website on May 9th 2018

Facility Expected to Open May 11, With Exceptions

Ontario Parks is reporting that they will be proceeding with opening all areas of Algonquin Park on Friday, May 11, 2018 previously affected by delays. However, Park visitors should expect to encounter some late winter conditions that may pose some hazards, and potentially negatively affect their experience. Due to this, arrangements have been made with the Ontario Parks Reservation Service for all customers holding a reservation with an arrival date up to and including the night of May 15, 2018, to receive a full refund or change their reservation dates without penalty. Reservation staff will be contacting affected reservation holders directly by email to inform them of this information and give them the option to call and make changes to their reservations (online changes are not an option without incurring penalties or change fees).

Algonquin Park Canoe Routes

As of May 8, 2018, many lakes are still ice covered, but it is anticipated that most lakes will be navigable by May 11, 2018. Park visitors that decide to continue with their existing reservation should expect to be potentially re-routed due to lingering ice on some lakes and bays. Based on current conditions, Lake Opeongo will remain closed due to ice until May 15, 2018 and therefore all reservations originating from that access point will be contacted directly by reservation staff to provide options.

Backpacking Trails

Snow and ice in shaded areas will make travel potentially challenging on Algonquin Park’s backpacking trails, and may be present on some campsites. Additionally, localized flooding is expected and may be unavoidable while navigating trails.

Campgrounds

Localized flooding, wet campsites and boil water advisories should be expected in Algonquin Park’s developed campgrounds. Snow and ice in shaded areas may also be encountered on campsites and all Park facilities.

More Information

Park visitors requiring additional information may contact Algonquin Park Information.

May 8th Ice Out Photo Report

Last week’s storm took out the connection to our BloomSky Weather Cam at Lake Opeongo again.  While I was at our Lake Opeongo store we reestablished the connection so you can once again see the live weather and images from Lake Opeongo in Algonquin Park.   Below is the short video from May 9th 2018 showing us setting up the webcam and it’s broadcast from the rest of the day.

See the current image and weather data from our Lake Opeongo BloomSky Weather Cam on our Algonquin Park Weather Page.

Delayed Openings in Algonquin Park

From the Friends of Algonquin Park Website on April 30th 2018

Smoke LakeOntario Parks, the government organization responsible for the management of Algonquin Park, has announced that the opening of the following areas of Algonquin Park will be delayed until May 11, 2018 (subject to change) due to the late arrival of spring:

All Algonquin Park visitors holding an affected reservation with an arrival date up to and including the night of May 10, 2018 can receive a full refund or change their reservation dates without penalty. Ontario Parks reservation service staff will be contacting affected reservation holders directly to inform them of this information and to make necessary changes to their reservations. Online changes are not recommended as visitors will incur penalties or change fees.

Mew Lake Campground is open year-round and camping is available. Most areas of Algonquin Park are still impacted with winter conditions and inaccessible snow covered roads. In addition, backcountry lakes still have thick ice on them and these lakes are expected to remain ice covered for another few weeks. Long term weather forecast shows little relief from winter. Conditions are being monitored and continue to watch this webpage for updates.

Lake Opeongo Weather Cam

Our Lake Opeongo Weather station is back online as of April 30th 2018 after being offline since August 2017.  You can see a live image from the top of our Lake Opeongo Store over looking the bay in front of our store in the South Arm of Lake Opeongo.

Our Lake Opeongo Weather cam not only shows the current and past weather conditions in a live photo and time-lapse video every evening but also reports on:

  • temperature
  • humidity
  • dew point
  • air presure
  • ultraviolet levels
  • wind speed and direction
  • rain fall over the last 24 hours and current mm/hr

Every morning our Twitter account broadcasts the daily weather forecast and every night we’ll post a time-lapse video from our Lake Opeongo Weather Cam from today. You can see our current Twitter feed to the left on this page.   Follow us on Twitter.

See more about Algonquin Park’s current weather on our Algonquin Park Weather page

Where is the weather cam located?

Algonquin Outfitters’ BloomSky weather station, (Storm) and Sky2 Cam, are located on Lake Opeongo in Algonquin Provincial Park, on the roof of the Opeongo Store looking out over Fish Gut Bay.  When you visit Lake Opeongo take a look up at the dormer on the roof facing the water, closest to the canoe racks (east side, facing north) and you’ll see two little round globes on poles.  These are the weather station sensory units.  The weather station is echo friendly too running entirely on solar power.

What does the camera see?

The camera takes a picture about every 5 minutes and captures a very wide angle view of the sky with some of the shoreline across the bay and the boardwalk where our canoes and water taxi sit.  The view is very wide angle so to capture the weather.  Can it see you?  We value your privacy, it can make out figures in the bottom of the frame but can not see faces or any great detail.  The camera is mainly designed to capture the sky and the local weather.
